I'm pleased with the overall look of my design context. I had planned on screen printing some sections but this proved difficult due to the folding and formation of the booklet. I decided instead to leave them blank they act as good page breakers.

My inital idea for Design context was to produce three separate zines focusing upon the different aspects that i believe define my design practice and what i produce.

I decided i wanted to produce a series of zines focusing upon the different aspects of my design practice. Focusing upon the printing of different zines, prints/posters and also focusing upon limited edition works. I wasn't full committed to this idea and my mock up was a little rushed so my presentation didn't go as well as i'd hoped. I tried my best to explain what i wanted to communicate about my design practice.

My feedback was really helpful though and gave me some sort of direction and focused my context down to the idea of bespoke limited run printed material, which makes it easier for me to dissect the information already on this blog.

I made a list of questions to send to certain people i've featured in my design context book.
Limited Edition

The questions were short and to the point but i got some interesting answers from various people.

I started producing some more detailed ideas focusing upon the design elements and development ideas, exploring different medias that could form a collection of material around the theme of Limited Edition.

I mocked out some quick design ideas. The design above was a small publication with some fold out pages, which would act as a platform to illustrate the different process used within printing small publications / zines.

I wanted to get away from Aformat products that i've produced for the majority of FMP. So reworked the format deciding upon a square format and made some initial layout decisions.

Filled in paper section of risograph to make it look more realistic. I think the tiny bits of colour on this page i will screen prints. I'm also thinking of screen printing the cover to give it a more limited feel.

Untitled Magazine

The layout and composition makes this first issue really stand out. The limited use of colour also adds to the feel and doesn't overload the senses. I was drawn to this work as the circle elements reminded me of what me and Andy have been doing on the art and design year book.

Simon Page is a self-taught graphic design whiz with a mathematics background. He takes shapes and morphs them into cerebral abstractions. His style shifts around futuristic digital designs and 1960s minimalism, trotting the delicate line between simplicity and detail. His International Year of Astronomy 2009 poster designs caught the eyes of discerning design writers, including the New York Times and Creative Review. It may be the year for Astronomy but its equally a big year for Page, his posters got a boost in sales from all the acknowledgment he’s been getting in print and on the web.

Where are you from originally?

From the UK - born and breed.

When and how did you come to be interested in graphic design?

I’ve been interested in it since I was a kid. I think the first experience of really being blown away by graphic design was when I first saw some record covers from Yes albums - which I still love to this day. I have only really got involved in promoting myself and creating my own self-initiated design pieces this year - having got into to it through designing corporate presentations as part of my full-time job.

Tell me what you were doing before doing graphic design.

I left university with a degree in applied mathematics and this landed me in a good job working in the City. I then got quite involved in programming and database development which then progressed to having to create corporate presentations which is where I first got involved in graphic design, just over a year ago now.

How does your math background influence your designs?

I think maths has inspired me hugely and influenced more geometric designs than I probably would of created otherwise. I also think a lot of artists, like myself, subliminally use mathematics in their creations - such as the golden ratio for creating eye candy layout designs.

I find it very satisfying getting mathematically correct proportions when designing something like a logo, for example. But for me the main connection between math and design is pure and simple, it’s geometry. The golden ratio is probably one of the most popular examples of math and design coming together but look back at the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, for instance, he used mathematics all the time in his art. I also believe some of the best designers work with math, in a number of aspects, even though they probably do it completely subconsciously.

How did your designs become the official International Year of Astronomy posters?

Quite by chance. The designs started off as a self-initiated project quite late in the year when I discovered it was the International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009). I initially thought this would be a great project to promote it and me. The IYA found them through my Flickr account, loved them and contacted me. I think the fact they are something quite fresh from all their other promotional material that they have used, being more 70s Swiss than cutting edge Trek, has really helped them stand out as something a bit special.

What is your approach to typography design?

I don’t think of myself as a true typographer as my typography designs are pretty much all vector based illustrations. My work in illustrations generally starts with being given a word or sentence to use. I will then look for relationships in the letter pairs and play around with a number of variations till I get a style I like and which fits the project. For A-Z typefaces I generally start working with a few key letters and then begin to extend these to a full set.

I’m really interested in how typography has now become an art form in itself and I also love the ability of working with letters almost as shapes but keeping legibility in the design (although anyone following my Flickr account will know I love “hard to read” a little too much.

How did you come up with the idea for the Rainbow designs?

This Tidal Rainbow was inspired by a photo I saw from inside a boat of a porthole with an interesting lens flare on the sea. The curves on the bottom of the Rainbow are representative of waves.

Which design project was your favorite?

My favourite project albeit not a real project was probably the Tron posters I created. This was another self-initiated set of work but the design agency that Disney use for their movie posters contacted me. They wanted to know if I would like to come in for an interview - as I had been selected with 9 others for a role they had, which would involve work on Tron 2010 material. I got very inspired when they released the first movie trailer and totally geeked out over it. I have always been a massive fan of the original film and so this is one of those project you just love to do and I couldn’t resist. This was so awesome and encouraging to know that people like this were looking at my work, unfortunately at the time I wanted to remain in freelance work - so didn’t pursue it.

Alphabattle is a weekly design challenge on flickr. You submit great pieces. What is your process of producing them?

I try and do something different with each letter each week and it really is just influenced by what sort of projects I am working on that week. I like the discipline of it, I love typography, it adds to my portfolio and it’s interesting thinking up a design based solely around just a single letter.

What are you currently working on?

This week I’m working on a number of t-shirt designs - this is something totally new to me and I’m interested in finding out where it leads and if I can come up with something fresh in this medium.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Inspiration has generally come from the Internet and great websites, like your own, which showcase all the latest designs and designers. But I am beginning to look at other areas of designs for inspiration now, like early Amish quilt designs which are so unique and wonderful.

What were five things on your holiday wishlist?

An ongoing international type and illustration initiative founded by Timba Smits, the creator of the award winning arts culture publication Wooden Toy Quarterly.

Through an exploration into the connection between two of lifes most important communication mediums 'Music' and 'Type', the LYRICS AND TYPE verses aim to collaborate with some of the worlds leading type designers, graphic designers, illustrators and artists via exhibition and print and visually interpreting how type and music can influence and inspire the way we feel, think or create.

Each LYRICS AND TYPE verse brings together a different and varied group of 16 artists, carefully selected by Wooden Toy Quarterly to respond to a project brief featuring interpretations of both famous, past or present song lyrics using a combination of hand drawn or computer designed type, illustration and imagery that would wet the pallette of any music and art lover.

The blog Manystuff have released their first editorial publication composed of well structured type and scientific diagrams, which give it an almost info-graphic based. The editorial piece is all one colour and looks stunning.

I just received my Supreme monograph in the post and it features a brilliant interview with the founder James Jebbia, who is in fact an englishman. It chronicles a range of subjects from the Supreme magazine, working collaborative and how they decide on the quantity to produce. What surprised me was how they agree a number with the collaborative partner. For me Supreme has always produced a limited quantity of goods never mass produced items

First thing I have to say to is that "Alife" is pronounced A-Life as in "aye-life", it IS NOT pronounced "uh-life" -- we get random people saying that at least twice a day in the store!

They started off as just a retail store/office in 1999 at 178 Orchard Street in NYC. You can see a picture of the space below.

I found a picture of the actual store too, humble beginnings would lead to one of the most sought after brands in the industry...

Later in 1999 the retail store moved locations to its current location at 158 Rivington Street in NYC. The store sells all Alife products as well as Married to the Mob products for the ladies.

Then in 2001, came the Alife Rivington Club store which is in NYC and also located at 158 Rivington St. The Alife NYC store and the Alife Rivington Club store share the same address, but are two seperate stores. The Rivington Club is a sneaker store and actually has a Nike Tier 0 account, which is the best account Nike gives out. Something like 15 stores worldwide have it! So they get all the limited sneakers there including all the Alife releases. The store also sells its own separate Alife Rivington Club apparel and collaborations, some of which we have in stock at Motivation, and it is getting known as a highly sought after brand-within-a-brand itself!

There are two seperate doors to get into each store (Alife NYC and Alife Rivington Club); the space is split into two long and narrow stores because they dont have the space like we do here in Michigan haha! Whats crazy too is that there is no signage out front except a little plaque (pictured below) and you press a buzzer to get into either store, and the person working buzzes you in...I guess that is one way to keep out the random browsers haha.

Then in 2005 Alife expanded out of the USA and opened their third store with Alife Vancouver in Canada. It has a very clean design and sells Alife products to all those north of the border.

Then in 2007 they opened their forth store in Los Angeles in the Fairfax district where there is now a TON of streetwear flagship stores. This store design is nuts, its like a museum where they have everything behind glass and you just look at what youd like to purchase. You then tell the cashier what you'd like and slide the money to them through a window and get your product. On a sidenote, I LOVE the sign outside of this store, just a big bold ALIFE, wish I could do something like that with Motivation but the city would probably fine us good haha.

Then, later in 2007 Alife did the unexpected and opened their fifth store overseas in Tokyo, Japan! The buildout is clean as f*ck and looks super super high class, nothing but the best here...

With all the exclusives and all the hype for limited edition... What makes a brand really standout as something that Alife needs carry?

"I think it comes down more to relevance in the marketplace. If there is a product that is really something new to the genre, say a Nike air woven, at the time of it's release, I think this is the type of product that we are interested in carrying. When the air woven dropped, it was the beginning of the sneaker craze, as most know it now. They had a product that was something really different and at the same time could be worn by people that liked sneakers.
Other brands that we carry are us showing respect for what these people are doing and the commitment that goes into their product."

Why are your t-shirts limited edition?

Everyone likes what no one else has. You don't want to walk down the street and see half a dozen people wearing the same shirt you have on. A lot of people are willing to pay a premium for a non-mass produced shirt. Plus it adds a whole other feel and makes it more than just a t-shirt line. It's collectible, limited wearable art.

The Ferrari Magazine

At just under $400 for an annual subscription (free for Ferrari owners), this 180 page 330 x 220mm

magazine is a fine piece of print and design.

I can't afford to pay $400 but the snippets of the magazine that are available have some interesting type and grid layouts with all black type and different imagery. I'm not too sure about the black type on the first spread gets lost as it creeps closer to the underside of the car.

In 2007 RISD graduate students pursued design research from an inspiring new angle, thanks to a partnership between RISD and Target Corporation. In a year-long studio course — the first all-graduate, strictly interdisciplinary offering at RISD — six students from different departments worked closely together and with Target's Innovation Team, defining and addressing consumer-oriented design challenges. This publication (7X9) is the documentation of that year-long studio. All photography and design done in collaboration withMelissa Lankhaar.

The graphic elements featured in this are similar to what we pitched for the art and design interdisciplinary year book but based upon the meeting we had today and pending the information we will be sent on thursday the graphic elements may be changed and experimented with as the number of people in the year book has increased.

Beautifully bright screen prints by Sophie Henson. I was initially drawn to the 3d posters as i'm working on producing my own 3d poster to enter into a lucky dip draw at the end of year show.

Patrick Fry was part of the collaboration that produced the No. Zine.

He oversaw Design and art direction of a book celebrating 50 years of PYMCA photographs.

The book was later recreated as an exhibition at The Royal Albert Hall. This book looks extremely well finished. I love the brightly coloured front cover and how that contrasts with the one colour print inside.

Every day for four months I received the New York Times, read it and composed something from it that would fit into a seven by ten inch spiral bound journal. In doing so I was able to move away from the computer and let the project simply evolve on its own over time. The final outcome was a visual account of my response to news, culture, arts and fashion from that period.

Artwork to promote Synth Eastwood's Fast Forward show at Birmingham's Flatpack Festival. A video, flyers and posters were produced around the theme of Fast Forward. Video can be seen at link below (produced with Synth Eastwood)

Karl Tommey's website is filled with stunning work in a variate of media and style.

The poster/flyer above echoes Fred's point about there being more to life than A-format. This poster/flyer for the Film festival resembles a film reel and the type works perfectly on the reverse and everything is unified by the one colour print.

His small publication work is simple in its delivery and strong in aesthetic making use of the pink stock and monotone print for its pink cover.

The monotone imagery continues within the booklet with splashes of pink print and stock appearing just to add a little variety to the beautiful illustrations and mixed medias.

His book cover work for this brief uses a metallic foil against a backdrop of black card and inside a one colour print consisting of varied page layouts and hand drawn illustrations.

I also wish i'd have found this when i was doing my blurb for the Faber and Faber brief. It would have come in handy. But i don't want to go back and touch any more of that brief as it would put me further behind schedule.

Poster and Booklet Cover printed in B&W on 350gsm Matt Paper

UV Spot Varrnish. Very simplistic design i was intrigued by the front cover of the booklet with the triangle shaped front cover and how the designer had integrated this across towards the poster also.

The UV Varnish adds to the whole aesthetic and makes it appear a little more high end.

OPEN-ENDED (the art of engagement) was as much about the featured art as how various performances and interventions activated the gallery and museum spaces. The printed material was an extension of this idea, creating a space for each piece to announce it's function in a playful and relevant manner. The most important of these was the Events Calendar, which listed all events for the exhibition and also manifested itself as a wall calendar inside the gallery.

One colour printed material with a focus on stock colour really makes these prints. The layout is nothing new but they work together as a set really well.

"Action for Age was a project based around the wellbeing of the elderly population of current society. I had to design/create a service, experience or design solution to help prevent isolation and loneliness amongst the elderly population.

I came to the conclusion of creating an organization called ‘The Tea Room’ the circle

stain of a cup of tea in itself can be used to symbolise the unity and the circle of friends created within this organization. The aim of The Tea Room is to create a warm community that elderly people feel they are a part of. The Tea Room Press; a community lead newspaper that would be run primarily by the elderly.

The Newspaper was designed completely to accommodate the needs and requirements of an eldery person. For the body copy of the newspaper and the overall house style of The Tea Room it was decided that Egyptienne 55 Roman was the best typeface to use. It provides maximum legibility and doesn’t look too obtrusive when used in a large weight."

A strong concept for this brief and interesting layout created to accommodate the older audience.

Microrayon Living is an inventory of everyday life strategies and D.I.Y. practices in the Post Soviet Microrayon.

Research were conducted, together with several local partners in Gldani, Tblisi and in Veshnyaki, Moscow, two identical city quarters in terms of layout, the former at the periphery of the former Soviet Union, the latter in the center of power. Striking similarities and differences came to the fore.

The next step in the research trajectory will be the development of a scenario for a social housing strategy in this context which will be presented at the Moscow Architecture Bieniale 2010.

The oder and direction of the sheets within the 6 different issues are placed in varied sequences. Therefore, the documentary portraits of the quarry workers are always positionned differently. It creates diverses picture compositions.

The central spread is the only entire portrait of the issue. The newspaper is not bound, so that every sheet can work as a poster.

I'm drawn to the idea of just using black and stock in my future works as i am starting to experiment with how much information i can reduce from a piece before it become redundant.

Two-color printing, so I used overlapping colors and images to emphasize the intersections between design and craft. The poster also functions as a mini-program; its eight panels can be separated and re-combined into a booklet.

Beautiful use of two colours to create an interesting booklet, which is something to bear in mind especially for the America brief i want to do. Using two colours would work perfectly in this case.

Wonderful type based work by Josh Finklea. His website is pretty slick for an indexhibit website also. The simplistic layouts and use of colour overlay makes these posters/publications less dull. I think aesthetically the Great American Writers book is the strongest as it is printed on stock resembling book paper.

Promotional material for the collective play “Den polske rörmokaren” (The Polish Plumber). The four different play’s are based upon an article series in one of Sweden’s largest morning papers.

Solution

We made a “Do it yourself” marketing kit including a pattern of A4 posters for making infinite format posters. The design elements symbolize each part of the play, and the whole object symbolizes the whole story and debate article.

Really strong promotional pack produced by Chevychase. I like how the poster unifies all the information on one surface and how the design is implemented across other formats.

A typographic poster for the ISTD (2010) brief 100, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the two Polar expeditions that took place in 1909, featuring diary entries by the two explorers during the journeys.

I found this magazine online and was surprised it didn't follow the typical magazine format. What makes a magazine. But the posters are all based around the concept of emptiness. Its got a Don't Panic feel to it although the posters appear more polished off and clean.

"Our starting material was „liner notes“, published 2009 by ‚spector books‘, Leipzig. It deals with the many content and aesthetic regarding thoughts, problems and attitudes a graphic designer faces while working on a book. The question is: how to deal objectively with a topic that you are deeply involved in yourself? We got inspired by german poet Bertholt Brecht and his theories of epic theatre, dealing with similar problems.

We analyzed „liner notes“, chose the chapters „typography“ and „attitudes“ and split this present data aside to new generated material by us into three simultaneously readable „acts“. We built „stages“ for the content, included theater-like breaks for the reader, commented inside the script by hand and found other play-inspirated ways to deal with text and image.

By playing around with the variety of the formats and formattings we want to point at the complexity and the „unfinished condition“ that characterizes the process of designing books.

Them and Us

Them-And-Us is an initiative aimed at bringing together 20 European and 20 African visual artists, designers, illustrators and photographers. The project aims to explore the similarities and differences between first and third world views and aesthetics by pairing up artists from Europe with their African counterparts.

Through a series of 20 double sided posters, artists are invited to explore the notion of ‘Them–And–Us’ and the broader theme of tolerance (or intolerance).

Working in two prescribed colours, each artist will create a poster. The reverse will feature a poster designed by an artist from the other continent. Each pair of artists will be paired and introduced at the outset of the project. Together each team will choose a specific theme, such as ‘Light–And–Dark’ or ‘Smart–And–Dumb’ and communication and cross polination will be encouraged. The final outcome should be two posters that talk to each other yet are distinctly the product of their respective makers.

The final 40 posters will be packaged together along with a 64 page publication profiling each of the artists involved and detailing the purpose and process of the project. Them–and–Us will be exhibited in Durban, Cape Town, Stockholm and London early in 2010. All proceeds from sales will go to Amnesty International to help in the global fight against intolerance.

Them–And–Us is curated by South African design studio, disturbance, Stockholm resident and graphic designer, Noel Pretorius and British designer/writer Adrian Shaughnessy who will also write and edit the accompanying publication.

A really interesting project and the packaging of the publication caught my eye, as did the simplistic use of colour and geometric shapes to convey the different viewpoints of european and african artists/designers.
